Homemade hand sanitizer is something I have wanted to make for a long time. Since I am a teacher, my students and I go through about a gallon of this a year. While I’m kidding, I’m really not kidding. We are constantly diffusing Thieves in our classroom, and so hand sanitizer and tissues are used everyday. However, I often have to pay for these out of pocket. To save myself some extra expense, I have decided to start making my own. It is so easy, and this is a great way to cut costs at home too. I also like the fact that this does not use any of the harsh chemicals that have been described in many articles I have read recently. Once I started using Young Living Essential Oils, this was one of the first things I decided to make. Check out all of our Essential Oil DIY posts.
How to Make Homemade Hand Sanitizer
Once you gather your supplies, the process is pretty easy, and before you know it you will be cutting this item out of your budget. Also, remember that Young Living Essential Oils are therapeutic grade, and they can eat through petrochemicals, so this must be kept in a glass jar or bottle. I purchased this set of four glass lotion bottles for our homemade sanitizer. Please note you will have some extra to fill a second bottle, but it may not fill it the whole way. This makes a moisturizing hand sanitizer from the grapeseed oil, so it should leave your hands smooth, not dry.
Ingredients & Supplies:
- 6 oz. Aloe vera gel
- 15 drops of tea tree essential oil (Melaluca) and 5 drops of your choice of lavender or lemon. Young Living Essential Oil users can also substitute Thieves essential oils instead of these listed oils.
- 1/2 oz. (1 Tbs.) vitamin E oil
- 2 Tbs. grapeseed oil
- 1 oz. (2 Tbs.) rubbing alcohol
- funnel
Directions:
Place essential oils, vitamin E oil, almond oil, and rubbing alcohol in a stainless steel bowl and mix thoroughly. Add aloe vera gel and mix thoroughly again.
Place in lotion bottle via a funnel.
Our funnel end is extra long, so we use a straw to help push the sanitizer into the bottle. Shake well before each use.
