It’s easy to make your own day spa at home. Several years ago, I made several visits to a local spa for massage, a facial, and several other treatments over several months. When we added our addition onto our house, I went for a spa theme in our new master bedroom and bathroom. I tried to create a relaxing environment with paint colors, drapes, wall decor and more. We also put in a jacuzzi tub. However, I quickly realized that I could create my own day spa at home and save much money by creating my own spa experience at home. All of these spa treatments would cost you hundreds of dollars in a traditional spa.
How to Create Your Own Day Spa at Home
- Choose a space. In our post about 20 Ways to Get Rid of Stress, we list over 20 ways to get rid of stress, of which many can be done at home. It’s very important that you choose a space in your home that is going to be your day spa at home. I chose our master bedroom and master bathroom. Maybe you don’t have much space, but could devote your master bedroom to this idea if you share a bathroom with other family members. Make sure that this is an area that you truly feel won’t become cluttered, or make sure you take the time to un-clutter before you begin your day at your own spa.
- Less is more. In our series on How to Become a Minimalist we discuss how less clutter in your life will leave you feeling less stressed and your mind will be uncluttered. It’s important that whatever room you choose be uncluttered as well to have a spa feel. Colors should be beautiful but muted, as well as artwork. I also have several strategically placed candles.
- Music. I have a small CD player in our “zen room” as I call it, and we have several CD’s that play relaxing spa type music. This Music for Healing is one of my favorites.
- Massage. Hubby bought me this BestMassage Burgundy Premium All Inclusive Complete Portable Massage Table Package for under $100 and we use almost every week. While we’re not professional massage therapists, giving each other massages has eliminated hours upon hours of stress and saved us more money on spas than you can ever imagine. We just read books and googled as much as we could about massage, and consider ourselves self-taught amateurs. If you really want the full spa effect, you can even get your own Elite hot towel warmer to use at home, where you can add hot rocks for your massage as well.
- Facial. The steps to a classic facial include cleanse, exfoliate, steam, massage, mask, and hydrate. Since I have started using Young Living products, they have the ART Skin Care line that I absolutely love that comes complete with a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. We also show you how to make your own Best Anti-Aging Moisturizer for pennies. Here is a list of nine DIY Facial Masques that work. I love to use this Conair True Glow Moisturizing Mist Facial Sauna System for the steam component of my facials.
- Mani-Pedi. I keep all of my nail supplies in this carrier that I purchased from Amazon. I keep all of my mani-pedi supplies in this tote. Of course I purchase all my supplies on sale or with coupons, and I don’t waste money on extra colors that will go to waste. Also, this Paraffin Dip Heat Spa is a must-have, and I use it all of time before my own in-home manicure. I use coconut oil as a cuticle cream, and have my own cuticle trimmer. I do ask hubby to cut the cuticles on my non-dominant hand, which is hard to do on your own. I also keep a small jar of my Best Anti-Aging Moisturizerat my desk at work to moisturize my hands and cuticles during the winter months.
- Hair & Make-up. On my spa days I typically give my hair an extra treatment with this DIY hair mask. After the mask I use my favorite DIY leave-in hair conditioner for extra conditioning, and I don’t heat treat my hair that day unless I am going out of the house. I try to give my hair one day “off” from heat treatments each week. However, if it’s a day I’m going to be leaving the house, then I do blow my hair dry and use my Babyliss flat iron and the products that came with it. I’m pretty minimalistic when it comes to make-up, so foundation, mascara, and lip gloss are my basics.
It’s important to treat yourself to a day at the spa at home every few weeks. Taking care of yourself allows you to take better care of your family. Comment your ideas on how to create your own day spa at home below.
