Have you ever wanted an ice melt recipe that was safe for pets and didn’t harm your concrete? We have a homemade hack for you to try! We have three dogs and I really worry about them ingesting poisonous chemicals. I’ve been looking for a homemade ice melt formula and have tried several. This is the one I felt was safest to use around our pets and worked the best.
We are always trying to make things at home for less, like our DIY Baby Wipes or Homemade Laundry Detergent. However, we like to try them and make sure they really work before we share them with our readers. Make sure to check out all of our Frugal Living and DIY posts and all of our Green Living posts as well.

I tried it and now I have a slippery sheet of ice outside my front door. This is so dangerous!!!!!!

Wouldn’t the dawn make it slippery?
Steph
Hi Tammi!
No, because you are using such a small amount, and most of the time it would be on concrete or a rough surface.

What’s the purpose of the dish liquid? Isopropanol and warm water should melt ice very nicely (I teach high school chemistry), but I don’t understand what the detergent does.
Thanks,
Susan (always looking for tidbits for my students)

I would think the dish detergent is there to give the solution more substanence and keep the alcohol properties in tact for a longer period of time instead of evaporating as quick as the water gets absorbed as it finds its way to any dirt , grass, borders, cracks etc.
It may also help keep the water and alcohol from separating as much?

I tried this and it got slippery how long does it take to work

DO NOT USE IT !!! Good way to kill your grass or anything the residue will wash into (gardens etc). Not a good idea. This will also harm any beneficial insects or reptiles (toads) that may be nesting in the dirt over the winter !!!!!

I have used it several times and never made my sidewalk slippery. Actually made it dry. It’s a game changer! Snow coming in a couple days and will use it again.
