Clothing is one of the most fluctuating components of a budget. It’s also the part where we have the most control. Here are some full proof ways to slash your fashion budget and still look stylish! Check out our post about Places to Get Clothing For Free For Your Family.
1. Invest your clothing dollars wisely. Always keep a staple of classics – a constructed blazer, a solid colored pencil skirt, a tailored white blouse, a turtle neck sweater and a little black dress are the building blocks of any good wardrobe.
2. Shop the Sales – but be smart!
Do your homework first. At the beginning of each season, research the latest styles. Then look at your clothes and see what can be updated with a change of accessories. Make a list of what you need.
3. Shop often – but have a plan.
Scan the adds weekly; look through the sales racks for classic pieces for next year. Resist impulse buys. Follow your list.
4. Use coupons.
Search through the local newspaper adds and on-line sites for coupons.
5. Buy and sell at consignment shops.
Search through your closet – anything that you have not worn in a year goes to the consignment shop. When you drop off your clothes, shop too.
6. Shop yard sales. While it can be tough to find the right size sometimes for adults at yard sales, the newspaper ads often list what types of clothing are available.
7. On-Line sites are growing.
Cyber Yard Sales are the hot new trend. Many people in my local area belong to a yard sale Facebook group where they sell their unwanted clothing. Also, sites like ThredUp allow you to sell used clothes and buy new (used) clothing. It’s a good way to reach more people, and you can shop in your PJ’s!
8. Trade with Friends and Family
If you have a special occasion and you need an item that you will rarely use,
ask friends and family if you can borrow from them. This is an easy and cheap way to enlarge your wardrobe.
9. Mend it.
Don’t get rid of your favorite piece because you lost a button. Buy new buttons and replace them all. If the repair is more than you can handle, find a
tailor and get an estimate on the repair cost. Get shoes and boots re-soled, if the cost is less than buying a new pair.
10. Re-style it. Get creative with the clothes or accessories that you have grown tired of. Pair each piece with something different. Mix and match jewelry, scarves, etc. Invite a creative friend over for a “style evening” – she will look at your clothes with a new prospective. Have her bring some things that she is looking to rehab – maybe you can trade!
