My cousin has been my hair dresser for over twenty years now, but I finally started asking her for advice about my dry, damaged hair. Maybe it’s because I’m getting close to middle age, or because I had a baby last year. However, ever since my son was born in 2014, my hair has been dry and not as easy to manage. When I was pregnant, I had no issues, and my hair looked amazing. However, my cousin shared some great tips that have totally helped me get my soft hair back, and I wanted to pass those tips along. I also wanted to show you how to do it for less at home.
How to Repair Your Damaged Hair
- Don’t wash it. This is by far her number one tip for helping to repair damaged hair. She explained that the longer I can go without washing it (she recommended 2-3 days), the more my natural oils can help restore my hair. Check out our DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe.
- As little heat as possible. She also felt that drying it with a hair dryer, using the flat iron, or curling iron (or any heat styling product) was to blame for my damaged hair.
- Protect from heat. She insisted that I use a heat protectant spray on my hair each time I used a heat styler.
- Give color a break. While this isn’t really an option for me since I’m already over 30-40% grey, I decided to at least let my color grow out some to give my new roots a fighting chance.
- Condition. She suggested that I condition my hair each time that I wash it, but that I should also use a leave-in conditioner or smoother. Try our homemade leave in hair conditioner you can make for less.
- Use a hair mask or leave in oil treatment. Watch for our upcoming post with our own mask and leave in treatment. I love the Mirah oil from Young Living.
