If you enjoy family musicals with a variety of song styles, you will enjoy the non-stop performance, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. Multi-award winning masterminds of collaborated successes like EVITA and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber entertain us with one of the most enduring shows of all time. JOSEPH is one of my favorite Broadway shows, and we were invited to attend a performance at The Kimmel Center.
The show is currently on tour. This modernized version of the Old Testament is a wonderful musical for all ages. Inspired by the bible story, this stage version takes you through Joseph’s life and the lesson of humility and ultimate forgiveness as Israel’s favorite son.
Tony-award winning Andy Blankenbuehler directed and choreographed this new production, with projected images to complement the story, throughout the performance. The cast of players were wonderfully talented and brought the tale to life with heart-felt songs, dance and delight. Book your tickets and be part of the magic and unforgettable songs!
WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT?
Joseph and his large shepherding family lived in Canaan and were led by their father, Jacob [who later becomes father Abraham]. Joseph had a reputation for having extraordinary dreams that no one could understand, and he would often entertain with the stories they seemed to tell.
Jacob loved his son Joseph more than his other eleven sons, and spoiled him as often as he could. The other brothers were jealous of all the attention. Then one day, Jacob gave Joseph an amazing multi-colored coat. This extravagant gift made the brothers green with envy and intense anger. To add to the fuel, Joseph was so excited about his gorgeous green, yellow, pink, orange and blue coat that he bragged about it. Finally, the brothers got so sick of Joseph and they decided to get rid of him. Interestingly enough, this was the historical start to the never-ending strife among the Middle Eastern twelve founding families.
The brothers take Joseph out into the desert, and end up selling him as a household slave to a rich potipher (captain of the palace guard) in Egypt. The heinous brothers return home and convince Jacob that Joseph was viciously killed by a goat.
Meanwhile in Egypt, Joseph works very dedicated and hard, so he quickly gets promoted to the head of the household. The promotion catches the attention of the potipher’s wife, who tries to grab Joseph when she can. Of course, Joseph gets blamed for the woman’s attention and get thrown in jail! What happens next???
