Cars 3 is zooming into theaters on June 16th! Did you ever wonder HOW the movie was made? I was invited to Pixar Studios to learn all about the making of Disney/Pixar’s new summer 2017 hit. Click here to read about my “Exclusive Tour of Pixar Animation Studios”. One of the largest tools in creating this movie, can be found in: PIXAR IN A BOX.
During our incredible CARS 3 Press Event, we were treated to a special presentation by the creators of one of the most innovative, educational and interactive FREE online tools available. Welcome, to PIXAR IN A BOX.
Pixar Animations is all about story, driving technology and art, which returns to drive improved storytelling. Each project helps to strengthen and educate the entire team for the duration of the movie/show.
PIXAR IN A BOX offers a variety of topics that anyone can explore at their own pace. The intent is to show kids, parents and teachers how concepts they are learning in the classrooms are used for creative benefits at Pixar. Math, Science or Language Arts do not need to be stagnant, boring textbook pages anymore.
Elyse Klaidman [Director, Exhibitions and Educational Partnerships at Pixar Animation Studios] and Tony DeRose [Research Group Lead] explained that Pixar had been receiving constant calls from Educators who wanted to use their innovative technologies in their art programs. Eventually, a relationship was built with Khan Academy, and over the years more lessons were created to expand over almost any topic imaginable.
My daughter enjoyed getting comfortable on the site, by customizing her avatar, then moving onto videos and mini-assignments. LINK TO PIXAR IN A BOX
In Character Modeling, you are challenged to create the shapes of all the characters in the Pixar movies. That’s some pretty complicated geometry, and it turns out that there is really nice mathematical concepts there – specifically the idea of averaging and weighted averaging.
In Environmental modeling, kids learn that the beautiful forests in Brave are built out of little pieces of curve called parabolic arcs. Parabolas are things that 8th graders typically study with no clue why they ever need them. Pixar teaches that if you want to make a beautiful forest, parabolic arcs are your friends. Each of the topics in the BOX is hosted by one or more Pixar employees.
One of my favorite lessons explored the concept of Patterns in Computer Animation. I enjoyed learning how the artists created the skin designs on the dinosaurs in ‘The Good Dinosaur’.
I cannot wait for you and kiddos you know to try PIXAR IN A BOX. Comment below with the name of the lessons that you enjoyed.
