I can’t believe it finally happened. I ran out of laundry detergent. I haven’t bought any for over a year. I have gotten several bottles and paks to try in the mail to do reviews and giveaways with so I haven’t really needed any. And now it has finally happened that I am out. Did I panic and run to my coupons to see what I could buy? NO! Did I run to the store to go buy some today. NO! It is way too rainy today to go outside. I did the most frugal thing I could think of, I made my own. Yes I made my own laundry soap for just pennies. I have wanted to do this for a long time, but I just never had a reason to until today.
Laundry Detergent Recipe
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Borax
1/2 cup Washing Soda
1 Bar Ivory Soap
1/4 Cup Dawn Dish Liquid
Lots of water
1. First shred your 1 bar of soap. This looks like yummy coconut when it is all shredded in the plate.
2. Add six cups of water into a pot on the stove. Put in the soap and heat until the soap melts. This doesn’t take long
3. Add the washing soda, Borax and Dawn Dish Liquid.
4. Pour four cups hot water into your stir pot. Then pour your soapy mixture in there and mix well.
5. Now add around 20 cups of water to your mixture and mix well. Let this set for 12-24 hours. I poured mine back into my jug I keep over the washing machine.
How much did this cost me. Hard to say. The Ivory soap was FREE, both Boxes of Borax and washing soda were around $3.00 and the Dawn was $0.50 for the bottle. This probably cost me less than $0.50 to make. Why do I add the dawn you might ask? Because of it’s degreaseing qualities. If it can get oil off of ducks and marine life, it can get your oil out of your clothes. Click to read more about using Dawn to clean your clothes.
Now, I just wish I had some clothes to wash. You might want to mark that down. You will never hear me say that again! Now on to the PARTY!
