Welcome to this installment of our 35 Days to an Organized Home Challenge! We’re hoping that you will learn some GREAT tips about keeping your refrigerator organized, which will help you save money! We even have a video tour of our own refrigerator below! Remember, you can be as organized in your fridge as you want, but this will affect how much you plan on spending! In the video I discuss using less expensive alternatives to keeping your fridge organized (i.e. inexpensive baskets/bins, and cleaning out uneaten food regularly). Keep in mind that no matter how organized you decide to go, you will still need to MAINTAIN your system! This is true for all organizing systems! They don’t work if they aren’t maintained! So, now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about some awesome hacks for fridge cleaning and organization!
1. Cover your shelves with plastic or cling wrap. This will keep you from having to clean them by removing them from the fridge. Just remove the cling wrap each time you clean and replace! It’s that simple! You can also use contact paper, but this can get a little more expensive, and you will still need to wipe this down frequently. You can also use plastic placements or cut down the thin plastic cutting boards you can buy at the Dollar Tree!
2. Keep raw meat and seafood on the bottom shelf, so if you have leaks, there is less mess to clean up!
3. Use organizing bins! We discuss the cost of this in the video, so you have to be careful when looking at your budget.
4. If you have room, use a Lazy Susan so that you don’t miss items in the back. However, our fridge did not have enough room for this to work. So, this really does depend on your fridge’s dimensions.
5. Use magazine holders as freezer shelves, but turn them on their sides. Of course, you will have to place thinner rectangular boxes or freezer bags in these!
6. Take a photo of the items in your fridge BEFORE you go shopping so you know what you have!
7. Clean out foods that are not going to be eaten once a week and if you don’t use cling wrap, do a quick wipe down. Also, reorganize containers by size so they can fit more appropriately. This is part of maintaining your system, as we discussed before!
8. Remember to sort by item type, but also by size. You really get more “bang for your buck” whenever you sort by size. Sorting by size really is the best way to maximize your space, but consider food type as you are sorting to maximize organization!
9. Read more about How to Organize Your Food Containers in last week’s post, which will help you maximize your food storage space in the fridge as well!
10. Tips for food location:
- store items that don’t have a food safety risk on the top shelf
- store meats and poultry on the bottom shelves where it is the coldest, because these are a food safety risk.
- keep medium risk foods on the middle shelf.
- store fruits and vegetables in the crisper drawers to reduce wilting and breaking down of foods.
- Make sure your fridge is set to 38-40 degrees, as bacteria grows more readily above 40 degrees.
- Remove dust from fridge’s condenser coils as often as possible. This helps it run more efficiently.
