Welcome to our 35 Days to an Organized Home Challenge! I’m so excited about tonight’s post, because I feel this is an area where I family organized fairly well before this challenge! We have some great tips and a video for you to see how we streamline our son’s toys into our living space! We really tried to make sure that toys were organized inconspicuously, and storage flowed with our current decor! The majority of tonight’s ideas are in the video, so make sure you watch it and SUBSCRIBE to our channel while you are watching! (Please note, part II of the video will be live TOMORROW night!) Tonight’s video just includes part I. These will be combined into one video tomorrow night!
1. Maintain your organizing system. As with all organizing systems, you need to maintain this system once it is in place. Otherwise, you’ve lost over half of the organization battle.
2. Purchase storage that flows with room decor. Cluttered looks come from color combinations and organizing products that don’t flow with room decor. Purchase storage items for your children’s toys that match your own decor instead of making your living space look like a classroom.
The photo below shows a decor piece we actually received from my sister-in-law after one of her moves. She lives in a large city and has moved a few times, and changed her decor. We were lucky enough to snag this piece from her for FREE! We use it as my son’s school and tech center. It stores all the items he needs for school and all of his tech items (Kindle, Ipod Touch, 3DS and games, etc.). Plus, it totally flows with our decor! Score!
3. Use Ziploc bags. I use these all the time for small toys that need to be kept together. Then these can be labeled and placed in storage bins.
4. Recycle containers to store toys. I have used recycled coffee cans, plastic tubs, bins, etc. However, I place items into these “free” containers and place them in the larger organizing bins and totes. This helps break organizing down into even more manageable chunks without spending a ton of money. We also use Dollar Tree bins and pencil boxes, which can be purchased for $0.25 during Back-To-School sales. These smaller organizing items can then be placed into larger bins.
5. Use over the door or hanging storage containers. Over the door shoe storage holders (and the kind that hang in the closet) are also wonderful for storing Barbies, action figures, and more! These make toys easily accessible too!
6. Glue final projects. We glue EVERY single LEGO project our son (and husband) make.
7. Donate fast food toys to your child’s teacher. These make wonderful prizes that students love! It’s also a great way to keep plastic toys out of landfills!
8. Location of toys should depend on your child’s age. Younger children can only access toys that are at a lower level, so make sure that toys are stored in containers that they can reach. Take a “Child’s Eye View” of each room and try to decide how high and where toys should be stored.
9. Label. Make sure to label as much as possible, since toys are often stored in totes. This will prevent a ton of searching. I also label ziploc bags, pencil boxes, etc., so I know what is inside!
10. Use tackle boxes. As you will see in part II tomorrow night, I love to use tackle boxes for several of my son’s toys and craft projects. These are clear, easily labeled, and store tiny items well. These are great for small toys like doll accessories, rubber looming bands, Beyblades, etc.
