Ever since I could hold a book I have loved to read. Even if I couldn’t actually read the words, I was telling a story based on the pictures in the book. I’ve tried to pass this love of reading onto my boys, and I love seeing them reading together, and even though my youngest is only a year old, he knows how to hold the book, points to pictures, and pretends that he is reading to me. That’s why I love this opportunity to add free Scholastic books to my classroom library when I purchase specially marked Kellogg’s products, and redeem them at Kellogg’s Family Rewards (up to 30 books!).
After getting my undergraduate degree in Education, I decided to pursue my Masters as a Reading Specialist. This means that I had two extra years of schooling to help teach children how to read. I loved reading so much that I wanted to pass on my love of reading to my students. Early on in my career I realized how expensive it was to purchase all of my favorite books, but I slowly started building a classroom library.
I may or may not be a book addict. As a reading specialist, I teach students to read all day, every day. Part of my job isn’t just teaching my students how to read, but teaching students to love to read. Teaching a child to love to read is similar to the teaching a man to fish…. Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime. So it is with reading, teach a child to love to read and they will read for life. However, it can be very expensive to stock my school library. Between budget limits in my job and trying to save at home, it can be difficult to add to my school library.
I love partnering with Scholastic at school with free books, and now I have an opportunity to score even more Scholastic books for my library with Kellogg’s Family Rewards. Right now when you purchase specially marked Kellogg’s products, you can then redeem the Kellogg’s Rewards codes for free Scholastic books. ONE product can be redeemed for ONE book if you redeem your code within 14 days! This is great for teachers and parents! It was a score for my family, since my hubby and son love the delicious taste of Pop-Tarts! I also love nutritious Rice Krispies as part of my breakfast routine.
Start by looking for specially marked packages of Kellogg’s products that have the logo on the front shown above (Check out all participating products). I found the majority of the products in the cereal aisle at my local Walmart, and I made sure to only purchase products with the logo.
Once you purchase your products, you will need to open them for the code located inside the box (see mine below). It is actually printed on the side of the cardboard box.
Once you have your codes, you are ready to log-in/join Kellogg’s Family Rewards! You can also buy directly on Walmart.com and receive a free book from purchases made between 7/21/15 and 9/11/15. Look for the “Buy Now button” at www.walmart.com/KelloggsBackToSchoolBooks (includes full details for redeeming) for a list of all eligible items. Ecommerce redemptions are made via receipt scanning. There are 3 ways you can upload your receipt: via text, via scanning into your computer or Kellogg’s Family Reward app – only when you purchase ONLINE between 7/21 – 9/11.
After you log-in, you will have the option to enter your codes. New members will get the message shown below!
Make sure to enter your 16-digit code and let them know where you purchased the products.
Once you enter your first code, you have the option to enter a second code where it says “ENTER ANOTHER CODE” in yellow (see above).
Once you’ve entered your codes, you will have the option to click on the words “redeem page” to pick your books! You can sort by reading level as well! There are over 80 books to choose from on the site (some books also available in Spanish). Some books are E-Book options, so make sure they are not marked as an E-Book if you want a real book! Also, E-Books cannot be donated.
The majority of my students are boys, so I have been trying to build my classroom library to target boys in grades 1-3 with stories I know they will enjoy. Anything starting with the word “Attack” is probably a win for my kiddos! Please note, if you choose to donate your book, it will ship directly to the school you chose in an envelope that says it was generously donated by your family.
Once you click on “Continue to checkout” you will have to option to change your address and submit your order! It’s that easy! I’m so excited that purchasing these products allowed me to feed my family and add to my classroom library! It was a win-win for me! Let me know what books you chose by commenting below!
