We told you in our February Debt Payoff Update that we had paid off our Home Equity Line of Credit, and that we only had my husband’s student loan left. The HELOC was left over debt from our in vitro cycle. We also said we weren’t sure if we were going to pay it off right away or continue to build savings. However, God had another plan. We had been telling a family member about how we were planning on becoming debt free, and how we only had this student loan remaining. Within a week we were given a check for the remaining balance of my husband’s student loan. (See all of our Debt Free Journey posts here).
We were speechless. We even tried to say no, but this person would hear none of that, and insisted that this was a gift from their heart, and they wanted to bless us for various reasons. God is so good! Praise the Lord! We are now debt free (other than our mortgage). I was so excited, I decided to post March’s update a day early!
Debt Payoff Update for March 2015

I’ve been telling you since the fall that we have been working through our Financial Freedom Plan to become debt free. We also showed you how we eliminated $20,599 in debt in one day! When we started this journey, we had a $20,000 IVF Loan, $6,000+ in student loans, and a $20,599 auto loan (started as a $30,000 loan). That’s over $50,000 in debt at the start of this process, and that didn’t even include our mortgage!
How we made changes this month to save and earn extra income:
- We continued to watch Alaskan Bush People (the season finale was last Friday) every week as a reminder that humans need so very little to live and still enjoy life. We know there are a lot of haters when it comes to this show, but we watch it for pure entertainment, and because its a weekly reminder that we can live on less! This has really helped us keep the focus of spending less in our everyday lives.
- I’ve been sending hubby to the store by himself since I was pregnant last year and couldn’t walk on my swollen legs. We discovered he actually spent much less than I did with or without coupons! So, now I just complete all the deals, freebies, and moneymakers for our family. However, he goes for everything else once a week. This has saved us a tremendous amount of money, plus he gets some alone time! LOL
- We continue to work on building our Young Living essential oils team to create extra income for our family. This past month our check was over $200! (We’ve made well over $1,000 since October). We have been using these oils since last year, and they have made such a difference in our lives!
- We found out today that we will receive a nice chunk of money back on our taxes. This will go directly into savings, especially since hubby doesn’t work nearly as much in the summer when his clients aren’t in school. We will use at least half of that to live off of throughout the summer. The good news is that our local school district is adjusting the school schedule to start earlier next year, so we’ll only have eight weeks of summer. While I’m bummed we have to go back earlier, it will be less financially stressful!
- Good news: the van continues to run well since my father-in-law repaired it. Bad news: Hubby pulled into a parking spot today and a woman opened her door at the same time, causing our van door to break! It still works, but is clearly broken in half! Yikes!
- I’ve started reading a website about becoming a minimalist. I LOVE this idea, and goes along with the show we watch about the family in the bush. I’m intrigued with less things lately, and am starting to go through my belongings to see what I don’t use and either give it away or sell it.
Prayer Requests:
- Our 8 month old had to see a neurologist, and he had two different EEG’s to test for epilepsy. Praise the Lord these both came back ok! However, we were ALL sick during the month of February, and spent $300+ in doctor copays and prescriptions! The baby had RSV (a respiratory infection), and has been getting nebulizer treatments for several weeks, and just got over double ear infections. Our older son also had an ear infection, which is rare for him! The praise is that we are all on the mend, and that we have our FSA too, so we will get reimbursed for these expenses.
- Pray that the baby will sleep through the night. We haven’t had more than one good night’s sleep in eight months!
- Pray for hubby’s asthma, as it has not been under control since he had his own respiratory infection.
