This is so cute! Not to mention fun to make. My 8 year old loved this project and has been playing with it now for over a week.
Kid Rated Difficulty: 2 (out of 5)
What you’ll Need:
3 toilet paper rolls
x-acto knife
empty oatmeal container
colored pipe cleaners
wire snipes
paint (I used acrylic paint)
hot glue gun
tape
construction paper
googly eyes (optional)
Step 1:
Parents: Start by cutting the toilet paper rolls in half. This does not need to be perfect, which is good because cutting them straight is harder then I assumed.
Kids: Take the lid off the empty oatmeal container and a tape construction paper around it to cover the label.
Step 2:
Parents: Use construction paper to construct some sort of roof for the barn. All I did was make a funnel shape, cut off the extra and taped it to the oatmeal container.
Kids: Paint the toilet paper rolls. This is when it gets fun! If you want a green pig, make a green pig. If you want a purple cow, make a purple cow. You can also paint a door and windows on the (oatmeal container) barn.
**I suggest putting one coat of paint on at a time and then letting them dry before added another coat or color. This way the rolls don’t get soggy and fall apart.
Step 3:
Parents & Kids: Work as a team to hot glue eyes, ears, feet and/or wings to the animals.
Take the colored pipe cleaner and cut them using the wire snips down to the size you want and hot glue them onto the rolls. Let the kids pick out the colors so that they can be involved in this part of the craft. We used googly eyes on our animals but you can also just paint them on if you prefer. Don’t forget to paint on smiles and eyebrows!
