We are always looking for ways to reuse items in our home now that we are living are more minimalist lifestyle. I have always wanted some kind of decoration in our bedroom, above the head board. Those wrought iron art pieces look very classy, but tend to be pretty expensive. I had some left over paper towel and toilet paper rolls, so I decided to mess around and see if I could make my own art piece. Another way we reused toilet paper rolls was to make this toilet paper roll bird feeder.
These are the different sized flower decorations that I decided to create, then place on the wall in a fun pattern.
My supplies were:
- rolls of clean paper towel and toilet paper rolls
- scissors
- black marker (paint or spray paint)
- paper clips
- glue (I used Elmer’s)
Instructions:
1. Color the tubes black. [I would have liked to color the inside of the tubes as well.]
It took me a few tries with different markers, to find the one that I liked best. You can use paint or any color you like.
You might even need to coat it a few times to get the right depth of color.
2. Cut the tubes down to size.
I started with one inch, but then realized that they did not all need to be exactly the same width. Close enough is just fine.
3. This is the basic design that I started with. I did not really count, I just started gluing the ends of each piece together.
4. Next, I used a paper clip to hold the pieces together while the glue settled in.
5. After about 7 pieces, I moved to the outer ring, and added another piece to form a second layer.
6. After I completed another layer, I looked at the whole piece, and decided where to place the next ‘petal’. Some spaces needed 2 ‘petals’ between.
7. As I continued to add petals and layers, the overall shape started to form. Some more circular, some more star-like, and others more oval, or even lopsided.
Have fun with yours, and see how big and what shapes you come up with.
We’d love to see pics of your creations. Feel free to post below.
