Halloween is a fun holiday, but it can become very expensive very quickly. Many people don’t think about all the costs involved in this spooky holiday. Not only do you have the cost of costumes, but some families choose to hand out candy or have parties, which can deplete your budget surpluses very fast.
After we wrote our post about How to Have a Party on a Budget Using Dollar Store Items, we set out on a quest to see how many creative costumes we could create using dollar store supplies, and I have to say you can find many costume ideas and accessories for a fraction of the cost of big box stores. We’re going to go over those with you, and hopefully help you save on your costumes this year.
The Knight. As shown in the picture above, you can dress your child in all black or gray (I prefer sweatpants and a turtle neck or crew neck long-sleeved t-shirt), and accessorize with this knight shield and sword for $1.00 each. Also, here is a blog post about how to make your own knight costume, but we really like the knight helmet from this post the most! Recreate it in gold, and it could go easily with these dollar store finds. Here is a tutorial for the knight’s cape as well.
The Ninja. The picture above shows all of the awesome and dangerous weapons above that you can score for $1.00 each. Simply dress your child in all black clothes and purchase a piece of red fabric from the fabric section of a big box or craft store. Cut the red fabric up and place in strategic places shown in this post. Also, a black ski mask is perfect for the ninja head.
The princess. There were endless princess accessories – tiaras, wands, jewelry, even long fake hair. Pair these with her favorite church dress, and you can even purchase tulle from the fabric section of a big box or craft store to add extra length and “flowiness” (my own made up word) to make her feel beautiful.
The fairy. They had these adorable fairy wings which could be paired with a sweatsuit outfit or a favorite dress to turn her into the next Tinkerbell.
The cheerleader. These pom poms are too cute. Ask around to friends who have daughters who cheer who might not want to go as a cheerleader for Halloween and you could possibly borrow their costume. Otherwise, a cute sports team outfit will suffice with these adorable pom poms.
Rapunzel. This long hair pictured above is perfect to have her “let down her long hair.” Pair with a holiday or church dress and a few of the princess accessories, and she will feel beautiful.
While we did feel there were more items geared towards girls, we’d love to hear your ideas for dollar store Halloween costumes! Comment them below!
