This is a great weekend activity with the kids! Simple and yummy!!!
Using my grandmother’s age old recipe for sugar cookies, I decided to add a twist and make them to celebrate to cool air and beautiful leaves of fall. Here is the recipe for Grandma’s Sugar Cookies (otherwise known as Dolly Parton Sugar Cookies). I also tried using store bought dough and it does work if you want to save yourself some time.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 cups sifted flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
- 2 cups butter, softened
- 2 large egg yolks
Directions
- Cream sugar and butter in a medium-size bowl.
- Beat in eggs, then flour and lemon peel. Knead gently together. Don’t overwork the dough, but make sure it’s consistent.
- Chill dough for 3 hours.
- Preheat oven to 350’F.
- Divide the dough into 3-4 sections depending on your food color options.
- Add food coloring.
- Roll out as you mash the colors together.
- Cut into shapes/leaves and place on greased cookie sheets.
- Bake until tops get pinkish-brown, about 8 minutes.
