We recently had a make & take for essential oils where we made homemade deodorant. I have wanted to get away from store bought deodorant for a long time, and I have tried several alternatives, but nothing would work well for me. I sweat a lot, and I really needed both an anti-perspirant and a deodorant. I also felt those didn’t work against the smell and bacteria as well. I have to tell you I am in love with this deodorant. I’ve never been so excited about a deodorant, to the point my mom was like “Ok, I get it!” Check out all of our homemade essential oil items here.
We basically started with a base of coconut oil and worked out way out from there. However, we are going to share the final recipe where we found the consistency to be as close to perfect as we could get it for a 4 oz. canning jar. Please note, you can add a little more beeswax to get it hard enough to set-up in an empty deodorant container.
Homemade Deodorant
We started with the following ingredients:
- 1/2 C of coconut oil
- 2 Tbs. shea butter
- 1 1/2 Tbs. baking soda (If you get irritated in the armpits, you will need to reduce the amount of baking soda to 1/2 Tbs. or completely eliminate it from the recipe).
- 2 1/2 Tbs. arrowroot
- 1/2 Tbs. beeswax (You will only use this if you want a firmer deodorant for a deodorant container. You can either use an empty deodorant container or purchase a set of these deodorant containers on Amazon.)
- 20 drops of essential oils. I use 10 of Purification and 10 of Lavender from Young Living Essential Oils
Directions:
- Melt the coconut oil in a double boiler, of you can set up a system like we have with a glass measuring cup in a pan.
- When it is completely melted, I pull it off the stove and put in my essential oils. I mix those together and then add the arrowroot, baking soda, and optional beeswax.
- Add to your canning jar or deodorant container.
- Again, if your mixture sets up too hard (this is only if you use beeswax for a deodorant bar), use a little coconut oil on your finger and rub it on the top of the stick, and it will become the perfect consistency. However, 1/2 Tbs. beeswax should be good enough for it to set up without becoming too hard.
