Did you know you can grow food from your leftovers? Yep you can! And we are going to show you a simple way to grow garlic right from a clove out of your refrigerator.
This is what you will need:
Potting soil
A pot or container for planting
– I used an old formula can
Can opener or hammer if you are using a nontraditional pot
A clove of garlic
1. You will first have to make sure you put holes in the bottom of your container, to allow the water to drain out. Using the can opener or hammer make several holes around the bottom of the container going in a circle. Try not to make them too large so that your soil won’t come out whenever you water.
2. Fill your container with soil leaving about an inch or so below the rim.
3. Slice the clove open just a little exposing the already growing stalk. Depending on how long you have had the garlic, it might not have shown yet. That’s ok
4. You want to put the garlic in the soil so that the pointy part of the garlic clove is facing up and the side that was at the bottom of the head faces down, until the soil totally covers the garlic by about a 1/2 inch.
5. Water just enough so the soil stays moist, but not wet.

~Day 14~
6. Wait until they get a couple of inches tall before you start snipping them with a scissors. Leave about an inch of shoot on each clove so the shoot will continue to grow.

Very neat! I’ve wanted to grow garlic for years but kept thinking I’d have to buy plants from a catalog. With this method, how long will it take before new cloves are ready to be harvested? Do you have any links to where I can find out more about growing garlic? (like its cold hardiness) Thanks!
Carolyn
very interesting; I may have to try this. However, I am thrown by the fact that you mentioned taking your clove out of refrigerator. Stores do not refrigerate garlic; and they hold up fine on counter in a garlic jar.Maybe, the jarred variety require refrigeration.
