Today we completed a science lesson with our son on how to make glitter from salt! This is a GREAT way to talk with your kids about vocabulary terms like mixture, solution, compounds, elements, and more! Also, please note that this is not the consistency of the glitter you buy in the store. It will have a different consistency.
First, you will need your supplies:
-
salt
-
food coloring
-
bowls/containers
-
spoons
-
cookie sheet
As you can see, we chose to make small amounts, and used 1/4 C of salt, and between 5-10 drops of food coloring depending on what shade we wanted of each color.
Directions:
1. Place 1/4 C salt into the bottom of your container.
2. Place five drops of desired food coloring into salt and mix with a spoon (or fork). If you want a darker shade, add another 5 drops of food coloring.
3. Place glitter onto a cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. This allows the glitter to dry. However, you can also let it air dry, it just takes longer. I actually baked ours in the toaster oven!
4. Once it’s air dried, store it in an air tight container. A great tip is to store it in a shaker container for quick use with craft projects!
5. This can also be added to home made play dough for some extra pizazz as well!
