IceFest 2016 #IceFestPA
Earlier this year I posted about Frugal Entertainment Options for Families as part of our Spending Freeze. In that post I talked about attending local free events, and our local IceFest is one of the activities I talked about in the post. I thought it would be neat to show you a few shots from our local IceFest 2016 with our readers. This is such an amazing event, and the best part is its free. People come in droves from the surrounding towns to see individual ice sculptures that are hand-crafted on site.
Our town, Chambersburg, PA, is very historical, and was the only town burned in the Civil War. We normally have an historical fountain in the center of our square, however, this year it was removed for repairs. So, at Christmas the tree was in the square, but for IceFest they had this awesome sculpture that was backlit.
We had to get our annual picture of the boys on the ice throne. This is a tradition we have done since our older son was very little. This year we went on Friday evening, so the line wasn’t very long, which was nice, since the baby isn’t always very patient.
One of our favorite parts of IceFest is watching the artists carve the ice. They have special saws and tools, and even Jackson loved watching them use their tools to make a new ice creation.
One of the neatest things about going at night is that many of the ice figures are backlit and look so beautiful. I was telling my husband today that the artists who make these truly are artists with a skill that isn’t easily learned.
The baby loves trains, so he was mesmerized with this train sculpture. We weren’t able to get a “whole family” shot, but with two boys, that is tough to accomplish. We took our own hot chocolate and made sure we ate before we went so that we weren’t tempted to spend money on the “fair” type foods that were available. Some of the businesses had free activities for kids, free balloons, and free face painting. The best part about this event is that it was free, and we had an amazing time together as a family.
