My son and I have watched the Eagles and their babies on the Live Eagle Cam for years. There are two there this week, and no babies yet. They will come closer to spring. This is an extremely educational site, and my son has learned so much about animals and their habitats from these live cams. There is one for a bear, fish, a lion, hippos, elephants, giraffes, and more.
The San Diego Zoo also has animal cams for kids as well. I love watching the pandas too. We have gone to the National Zoo many times, because the entry is free, and it’s very educational as well. They have their own animal cams as well. My son and I were just watching the elephant cam, and there was a little one walking around and eating.
It’s nice to have several cams to choose from when you are teaching a lesson at home or at school, since the animals are not always active. As we have watched the cams over the years, there are times of the day when animals are more active. Sometimes we just let the cam run on our iPad while we eat dinner so we can watch them in their habitat over a significant amount of time. It makes great dinner conversation and we always have fun.
When our son was little I always had accompanying free printable animal coloring pages to go with the cams as well. This is a great way to extend the activity. We would also google facts about the animals and write them down on cards as my son started getting older and was learning how to write, spell, and learn animal facts. It’s amazing how much information he still remembers from those activities.
