Family Viewing Disclaimer (1/low – 5/high scale):
Feel free to make the best decision for your family. We are still very selective with PG-13 movies for our 10-year old daughter, and decided to see this movie without her. Our family loves games, and the Pixel trailer excited us for months. I was also looking forward to seeing my favorite actor: Peter Dinklage (‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Elf’), and some of my other occasional favorites: Adam Sandler (‘Grown Ups, ‘Big Daddy’), Kevin James (‘King of Queens’, ‘Hitch), and Josh Gad (Olaf/’Frozen’). Unfortunately, the best parts of the movie were in the trailer. My husband and I enjoyed revisiting the nostalgic games we loved to play, but we were not impressed with the characters. It was almost embarrassing to watch Peter and Josh behave the way the did.
We were disappointed that this was not more family-friendly. We could not take our daughter because we would have to explain ALL the jokes throughout the entire movie. That would not have been fun for any of us.
3 – NUDITY/SEX – Sexual gestures, females with tight/revealing clothing, homosexual innuendo.
3 – VIOLENCE – Several people are killed by becoming pixelated and disintegrated, 3D versions of arcade villains (Centipede, Donkey Kong). No blood, just very suggestive pain and death.
3 – PROFANITY – 3 scatological terms (including thought-bubble “*#!?@!”), 6 anatomical terms, 25 mild obscenities (including 2 “Fugging” that almost sound like F-words spoken by a man with a thick Australian accent), name-calling (crazy, nuts, stupid, idiots, morons, dopey, yokel, buffoons, meathead, cracker, snob, snobby, stalky, sucker, blighters), exclamations (shut-up), 7 religious exclamations (like “Oh God”, “Thank God”)
Synopsis:
A group of young boys loved playing classic arcade games in the ’80s. When they grew up, they were disappointed that their gaming skills did not give them fame and fortune. Kevin James is the president of the United States, and calls on his childhood peers: Adam, Josh and Peter to help him defend the earth from an alien race invasion. The aliens send their attacks in the form of ’80s iconic figures and arcade games.
I am curious to find out what you think of the movie. Feel free to post your comments below.
