Movie Review – No Spoilers Included
This Christian movie exploded at the box office over the weekend, making $11M with an extraordinary $9,692 per screen average.
My husband and I decided to check it out on Saturday, and found ourselves in a nearly private screening. MAYBE half of the theater was filled. Usually, an empty theater is not a good sign for a movie… especially during its opening weekend.
In this case, I was not concerned. I know that the up-and-coming Christian cinema industry only appeals to a niche group.
This half-filled theater did not bother me, because I go to movies for ME. I don’t belong to any official niche, and being a film snob, I don’t care if anyone else likes what I like. Different strokes for different folks. We all bring our own psycho/social baggage to a film, and receive our own unique ‘ride’.
I enjoy movies for the experience. I relish getting sucked into the adventure and emotions that unfold and enwrap me within their story. I love the audio visual roller coast ride, when the film successfully accomplishes that. Not always Oscar-worthy, but definitely a quality experience of some sort.
I chose War Room as a date movie with my husband. Now, my husband, on the other hand, is not a huge fan of Christian movies. He accompanied me to this movie, as a favor. Needless to say, his expectations were very low.
Then, to my surprise, all throughout the movie, my husband not only reached for my hand but leaned over and whispered ‘this is a good movie’. Yay: I get one point.
Synopsis:
A professionally successful, power couple has been slowly experiencing themselves growing apart from each other. The discouraged wife and mom, Elizabeth, finally realizes how bad things are through the eyes of her 10-year old daughter.
Spinning and drowning in her own bleak situation, Elizabeth finds herself befriending a widowed elderly woman. Elizabeth allows herself to be mentored, to rediscover her inner warrior and to fight for her marriage and family.
The War Room uses the military concept of strategizing and focus in order to successfully conquer a war (=several battles), and applies it to marriage. The steps involved tackle universally recognized marital issues and inspire you to reflect on your own relationship and strive for the life you want.
I highly recommend The War Room for your next quality date night.
