Organizing Your Office So Bills Are Never Paid Late
Create a dedicated space for paying bills. Instead of just shoving your mail, bills or emails into a folder and forgetting about them, create a dedicated space in your home or office to keep track of things. A basket on a desk, or even a binder you keep on your nightstand can work. As long as you have one central location that all bills and invoices are sent, you will be able to keep track consistently and less likely to miss a bill.
Use an inbox or folder for bills payable. Dedicate a specific basket, box or folder for all invoices and bills to go into until they are paid. This can also be used for invoices that are sent via email and have to be printed. Add invoices or bills to this folder or box until they have been paid. Once paid move them to your filing stack or filing cabinet for safe keeping.
Keep a file cabinet and use it. Whether you buy an old school metal filing cabinet, or simply use a plastic filing storage box keeping your paid bills filed is important. Some bills aren’t necessary to keep for a long period of time, but many are. It is a good idea to always keep your copies of bills or invoices for at minimum one year until tax time, but many should be kept as receipts for tax purposes for up to 7 years. A filing cabinet and filing system can help you to keep things in order with ease.
