My son is in Kindergarten, so this was DEFINITELY a test of this product. As with all learning DVD’s, these are TOOLS to use to teach our children to read. Any learning tool, by itself, cannot teach a child to read. I have been a Reading Specialist for almost 15 years, and I have never seen a one-size-fits-all program, but there are some tools that I couldn’t live without! I have to admit, this video is going to be part of my teaching toolkit. What I love about the product is that it hits so many different skills within the same video. I have had several dvd’s that teach one or two skills, but this video has a sequence of skills that can be used from learning letters and sounds to reading sentences. Each video segment teacher or reinforces a specific skill, whether letter names, letter sounds, word families, sight words, blends, or fluency. These are all necessary skills required for reading, and this video covers many of them. I would use this video at various learning points along the reading route. I might pull it out and use it when teaching a particular skill.
My son already knows his letters and sounds, and he is reading at an early First Grade level right now, so the first part of the video was review, and the part of the video about initial blends was new to him, so he was challenged in that area. I think this video can be used from Pre-K to First Grade for average learners, and if your child is struggling, this would be a GREAT way to catch up on necessary skills! Again, the progression through skills is very fast, so there will have to be some teaching in between the video segments!
Please Note: I received a complimentary DVD for my review, but these are my opinions as a Reading Specialist!!
