If you’ve read our posts about DIY Flea & Tick Spray for Pets, DIY Ice Melt (safe for pets), or our DIY Baby Wipes you know we like to save money by making as much at home for the lowest cost as possible. Since our son is the king of flushable wipes (He actually has a daily budget of how many wipes he can use so he doesn’t clog the toilet), we decided we wanted to prevent a clogged toilet by applying some kind of daily treatment to keep it clean. I scoured the internet, and found a concoction for Toilet Bowl Bombs on LifeHacker that we decided to try for ourselves to see if it worked. My husband normally plunges about once a week, because we are also Charmin users too! While I absolutely love Charmin, it’s not friendly to your plumbing!
The ingredients and directions were simple. The only thing we decided to change was to add 10 drops of Young Living Lemon Essential Oil. First, you mix the baking soda and Epsom salts until they are well blended and there aren’t any chunks. Next, start adding the dish soap little by little, and the drops of lemon as you stir the mixture into a consistency of sand.
Supplies:
- 2 C Baking Soda
- 1/4 C Epsom Salts
- 8 Tbs. Dawn Dish Soap
- 10 drops of Young Living Lemon Essential Oil
- Muffin tin liners
- Muffin tin
Line the muffin tin with the liners and spoon the mixture into the liners to allow them to set up. I used regular paper liners since I did not have any silicone liners. Allow the mixture to set up over night, and remove liners once hardened. I have to note that it took ours a few days to get harder, but they were never fully hard like I was expecting. I’m wondering if the lemon had anything to do with that, but I like the lemon smell, so I don’t care if they are 100% hard or not. I just plop them into the commode from the liners.
We started using them about two weeks ago and hubby hasn’t had to plunge since! If you decide to make these, let us know how they work for you by commenting below!

Are these just for clogged drains? Or can you use them for cleaning the toilet?

Could they also be used in sinks?
