This has to be the easiest and most inexpensive way to conserve water. In our area, these blue barrels go for $3-$5. To connect to your down spouting, just cut a hole in the side of the barrel (so that it will be laying on its side once its secured) and place down spouting into hole. This may mean modifying your down spouting slightly, depending on where is meets the “L” curve to come away from your house. (You can see another example HERE).
As you can see from the picture below, you can purchase an inexpensive spigot to place on the top of the barrel and snake into another hose which can water your garden.
